What is Penile Prosthesis?
While many treatments for ED attempt to restore erectile function, placement of a penile prosthesis is the gold standard for ED that can reliably restore sexual function for men. A penile implant is placed through a small opening in the skin, and once healed will allow men to have erections rigid enough for intercourse at any time.
Inflatable prosthesis
The inflatable implant has three components: two cylinders placed into the corpora cavernosa (erectile bodies) of the penis, a pump at the base of the scrotum, and a reservoir which hold saline.
- All components are concealed within the body, and are placed through a single small incision.
- When you want to have an erection, you will push on the pump to move saline into the cylinders, which will expand and create a rigid erection.
- After, you will push a small button, and fluid will transfer back to the reservoir and the erection will go away.
- The implant is permanent and durable, with high patient and partner satisfaction.
Malleable prosthesis
- Malleable implants are two flexible rods placed into the erectile bodies in the penis, and can be bent upwards for sexual activity, and easily placed back down after.
- The penis will remain rigid all the time with this implant, and is a good option for men who cannot manipulate the inflatable implant.
