Urethral Stricture

What is Urethral Stricture?

Urethral strictures are narrowings in the urethra, the tube which carries urine from the bladder out of the penis, and causes obstruction of urine flow. Strictures typically are caused by scar tissue building up after trauma such as a straddle injury, or urethral infection or inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Weak, split, or spraying urine stream
  • Stinging with urinating
  • Frequent or urgent urination
  • Difficulty emptying bladder entirely
  • Urinary retention (unable to urinate)

Treatments

  • Treatments are based on severity of symptoms or degree of obstruction and may be a dilation or stretching of the obstruction, using a small laser or knife to cut cut the scar in a minimally invasive approach (urethrotomy), or sometimes you may need reconstructive surgery for severe stricture (urethroplasty).
